EXPLOITING GHANAIAN FASHION: THE DRESS CODE

A new television program to hit our screens in April, The Dress Code, aims to promote the exploitation of Ghanaian textiles and designs in the Ghanaian Fashion Market.

In a press conference held at the DuBois Center, Mercy Takyi (CEO of The Domain), supported by the ministry of Tourism, Angelina Martey, Chairperson of the event, shared her dreams of achieving this. The Dress Code would be a reality show for fashion designers, which would encourage and challenge them to work their creative minds in designing and sewing marvelous works made from our very own Ghanaian print. Apart from the very big platform this show would place these upcoming designers on, it would also give them room to name their own designs , as well as validate their given labels in a Designer bank. This designer bank would protect the legality of the designs, hence helping to combat the common problems of pillage. This reality show would be separated into six segments which would include an education segment, a fashion show, as well as a celebrity catwalk.

Mercy Takyi, whose brainchild this is, shared her views about the negative effects globalization is currently having in the Ghanaian Fashion industry. She implored all present to join in their crusade to market Ghana through the use of Ghanaian branded clothing. The Ministry of Tourism’s presence was heavily felt and supportive as the goals of The Dress Code falls directly in line with the government initiative to change National Friday wear to National Everyday wear. The representative from the ministry applauded the efforts and dreams of The Dress Code, and implored others to take a page from their books. The Chairperson, Angelina Martey, further reiterated the financial benefits that could be derived from the fashion industry if it became a premium source of money for the country.

The Dress Code certainly differs from the rest in its bid to educate the general public. In tune with the motto of The Domain which is, “Touching our World”, The Dress Code seeks to touch our world by bringing to the fore, creativity, encourage branding and protecting brands.
